question: why do some listings not include download counts when there have obviously been downloads?

Because when you click 'other recent addditions', or 'other popular shows', it brings up a search page result, like this for matt nathanson:

http://www.archive.org/search.php?sort=-%2Fmetadata%2Fpublicdate&query=mediatype%3Aetree%20AND%20collection%3Aetree%20AND%20creator%3A%22Matt%20Nathanson%22

the info listed there is cached and not up to date. i'm not sure the refresh rate of that info list .. but if you instead browse to a year in an artist's section, i.e.:

http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?collection=etree&cat=Matt%20Nathanson%3A%202003

the download counts on the left ARE acurate to the present moment ...

hope that helps. it's all in the caching of search result pages...
